Hey i am leaving for Oz in a few months and travelling down the east coast (starting in Cairns). I was just wondering whats the best option for organizing and holding my money in Australia. Should one just carry around travellers cheques or open a bank account in Cairns when i land or something else. I have no idea! Any help woudl be greatly appretiated

hey a few suggestions that might be up ur ally.
VB is cheaper than other beers.... ;)
i dont really know much about travellers cheques but if u wanna check out a few bank options.. try the commonwealth bank ( ANZ ( westpac ( or the national australia bank ( im with the commonwealth bank and if ur a student they dont have any bank fees. just check to see if you can open an account without a permanant address.
but all the banks have branches in cairns so just walk in and ask questions.
have fun.

if u intend to be in australia for awhile and work, then open a bank account. Otherwise i would just use ur canadian bank card to withdrawl money from atm's here.
check that your card has either a maestro, cirrus or visa symbol on it tho, mite be wise to also check out international withdrawal fees from you bank in canada

hope this is somewhat helpful

I wouldn't bother with travellers cheques. You will nearly always get a better rate using an ATM and they are easier to find than somewhere to cash a cheque, particularly out of hours. Whether you open an account down under or not will really depend on how long you plan to be there.

I never had any trouble in Oz using my good old Canadian debit card and a MasterCard that I could pay online. For that matter, my debit card worked all over Europe, SE Asia, Oz and NZ without exception. The exchange rate isn't too bad either.

One caveat to consider though: Many Canadian debit cards support 5-digit PINs and I've heard that some systems overseas will only accept 4-digit codes, so if you have a 5-digit PIN you may want to change it just to be safe.

Have a great trip!

OK that cool, I never even thought that would be a possibility to use my Canadian bank card. That would be perfect! I will have to go see the bank peeps and see whats up. Thanks again
