my boyfriend and i are planning to go to india on the 10th oct, arriving in Chennai and then travelling around and up india, into nepal and tibet too for the a total of about 6 weeks.
i have been told that oct is in fact the rainy season but the guide book indicates variations in rainfall through out the country.
can someone help? we have a round the world trip planned and don't want to have to change the route but we also do not want to get caught in the rain.
dont worry about the rains it wont harm you... infact you will enjoy the rains. do go and visit kerala.. its a beautifull place.. and in rainy season you will like it more. do go to goa also.. one of the best places. there are very good place's in south side.. good beach's. if you go up to north visit, shimla, manali, my fav - kalingpong , gangtok, leh ladhak. it will be cold up there. be ready for the chills. lol.. hehe dont worry it wont be very chilly.. well 6 weeks is a very good time to spend in india. plan out properly .. deceide on what you want to see and what not. you will find varity of things to see.. from beach's to mountian to desert to coast to forest to many many things... you will find different cultures in every place to go.. i would just say.. think about what do you want to visit. by the way you wont get alot of rains in oct.. its almost or end of rainy season. if guess if i am not wrong you might get into the biggest indian festivel period called diwali. that time you might get some great bargians on shopping from cloths to antiques to jewellery to anything.. do visit delhi and mumbai.. fastest cities of india.. and by the way i am from mumabai.. if you need any further help do pm me .. i will get back to you as soon as possible.
I dont think rains will bother you in october atleast not in central and northern india and if there is any rain you will enjoy it immensely. Do visit Kanha or Bandhavgarh or Pench tiger reserve in Central India or the state of Madhya Pradesh.
october and u need not worry abt rains in most of india. the rainy season starts in may deep south and moves north with time. we in delhi[that is in north] have rains starting from mid-july and it ends by september end or so.
so u have chosen a good time to visit. and 6 weeks you are going to have a lot of fun.
if you need more help do pm me.

The information you have heard is CORRECT. Tamilnadu state (whose capital is Chennai) has rainy season from end Sept/early Oct up to mid Dec.This point is overlooked by many because most parts of India has rainy season starting from May till end July/early Aug.
Last year the rainy season was very bad inundating whole of Chennai but no one knows how this time the rains would be.But be prepared to experience rain incase you are visiting Tamilnadu state.Ofcourse it doesn't rain everyday unless there is some typhoon or some low pressure area.
What are the places that you intend to visit in India? If you can spell it out, then it becomes to offer suggestions.6 weeks is a short period to visit both India and Nepal(leave alone Tibet). What is your modeof transportation while you are in India? and from India to Nepal?
If you detail it out, then your plan can be optimised based on suggestions from TP members.
thanks everyone for your help.
