Hey,Banala.I would like to share my experence in Beijing with you!
I hope you will benefit from mine .
Last summer,I visited the summer palace. It is a good taxi drive from the centre of Beijing,.On the way to the palace ,enjoying the local and old buildings and people is funny. The palace has been developed over centuries with special atmosphere.yeah, the unique buildings with beautiful decoration , statues of mythical animals, and wonderful wildlife are all part of a visit to the summer palace. It would be a shame to leave Beijing without visiting the summer palace.During my stay in Beijing ,I spent 3 days in Red Wall Hotel Beijing which I booked througth http://www.86hotels.com The staffs there were very helpful and gave plenty of travel advices to us which made us feel convenient.
Have a nice trip !

You will probably get more answers if you ask your question in the Asia forum instead of the Travel Gear forum...

Angela is right about posting in SEA forum, move it across. I stayed in Beijing for 1 week in Far East Iternational Youth Hostel in a dorm but they offer double rooms and they look really nice too. Not sure on prices for doubles but check out the website through googling it. It is located 10 mins bike ride from Tianamen and is in the hutongs surrounded by local, cheap restaurants serving the best food i've eaten. Temple of Heaven was really nice, Forbidden City was alright but lots of tourists, and Tianemen Square is good to visit for it's historical significance to the country. Beware people asking you to visit their Art Exhibition - it is a con for you to buy their art on the "last day"!! This last day lasted all week when i was there!! If you have time, it is well worth visiting the Great Wall. I walked from Jingshangling to Simatao which is 10km and less visited by tourists. The Acrobats were exceptional and well worth visiting for a night time show. Enjoy:)
