Hello! I'm also going to SE Asia soon so I've done quite a lot of research on budget needed. You'll easily get by on £700 and be able to live relatively well. Depends what you are expecting though!!! If you are preparing to rough it, you'll probably be surprised at how far your money stretches. Check out Lonely Planet's "South East Asia on a Shoestring" and there are some good threads on this site on the same subject. As I haven't been yet I can't recommend anywhere fab I've found!! Happy travels
Re: Islands in Thailand, just remember costs are a lot more then others parts of Thailand, Lao & Cambodia. Especially the Andaman Islands & Koh Samui.
Eat local food, travel by bus, haggle for goods & services, and don't booze too much & you'll see that your money will last longer.
Good luck & have fun.
I will send some info in a PM.
I am doing the opposite trip to you, starting in Bangkok and making my way down to Singapore and from the information I have been given over the last few months am going on a £20 daily budget.
If you are going for 6 weeks you will have aprox £16.50 daily which I think you will be able to get by on, but like the advice given before my post, you will have to watch the pennies a little bit!
Hope your trip goes well,
A very very tight budget. But i think u might just make it, if u are careful.
Remember to keep enough for airport tax, for when/if u are flying out of Asia.
if u strictly spend no more than 15 pounds a day, u will make it. That will be easier in some countries, than others. eg Thailand. u will only need around 8 to 10 pounds per day there. Other countries in Asia a a little more expensive, but a lot of them, not much more. So choose carefully which ones u go to.
u can take overnight trains and buses, to cut down on accomodation expenses. And remember, in some countries u will have to pay for visas. ie, in Burma the cost of visas can add up.
If you are feeling brave, bring cash, rather that travelers cheques, or whatever. This will save on commission.
If there are any specific questions u would like to ask, about particular costs of things, just ask. I have the latest copy of South East Asia, on a Shoe String book here.
