hi, i stayd in Gecko Lodge in Darwin, which is bout a 10 min walk from the main bit, but it is a chilled, relaxed hostel. it is also nearer the beach...I cant remember the name of the beach, but they have a market there twice a week and the sunset is gorgeous there! (also a good place to stargaze!)
You will know everything about Darwin in 10 days! I was there for 3 weeks (due to my lack of organisation to book my next train!) and i got quite bored there towards the end. U have to do Kakadu National Park. I would recommend Kakadu Dreams.

I was lucky enough to stay with friends in Darwin but apparently Frogshollow is a nice and relaxed place to stay. If you want it the cheap way go for the Youth Shack, it has recently been reopened and their dorms are $18. It's a bit of a party place though.

Aimsuk is right 10 days is plenty in Darwin. Mindil beach markets are a must, I went there twice and loved the food and atmosphere. And what can be better having a Nutella banana crepe watching the stars on a beach .

Also, the history museum (entrance free) is pretty cool and a stroll around the botanical gardens is nice as well. Fannie Bay Gaol features Aboriginal history and Casuarina Beach is beautiful to go for a swim. Be aware of crocs!

Considering mainly overpriced tours to Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, I would get together with other people from the hostel (maybe put up a note) and hire a car for the day. You end up paying a lot less and aren't pushed for time! The parks are amazing and you shouldn't miss out.

Hope this helps,

Steff

I stayed at the YHA in Darwin, which is on the main street, next to the bus depot. It was ok there, was a little too big for me, less of a personal touch. Isn't a great deal to do in Darwin, unless your planning to take a trip to Kakadu National Park.

Mindil Beach! that was the name i couldnt think of! I went there twice a week for the 3 weeks i was there, and kept finding new bits to see! some of the live entertainment is great esp EmDee...a didge and drum group...really fast up beat dance stuff. great atmosphere!

Didnt go to the history museum, but did get to Fannie Bay Gaol ( i ended up there from just going for a walk and not knowing where i was going, but most hostels have bike that you can rent) Also if you want to do some shopping, there is a free bus from most of the hotels( not hostels!) to a shopping centre( cant remember name...im pretty hopeless at names! sorry!) with a cinema there which is a day out. talking of cinemas, there is also an deckchair cinema which is open air under the stars which was quite cool.

might post again, when i remember more of what i did in Darwin! :)

The shopping centre is called Casuarina just like the beach ;).
