Travel Forums North America HI - Hostels- Worth joining?

It has been suggested that I join Hostelling International for both the US and Europe. Is anyone a member that can tell me if the membership fee is worth it?

Yes, but more so for Europe. I do use it in the US, but some hostels have given up their HI affiliation. Others are not listed, but will give a discount if you ask and present the card. This was the case for me last week in Eugene, Oregon. It is an independent hostel ( pretty nice, too ) and they gave me a discount with the HI card.

When I was buying my Eurail pass last year, my travel agent suggested I get a card, but I decided not to and did not have a problem finding cheap accomodation. There are so many hostels out there in Europe that I think you'll be ok. We travelled in the middle of high season and the only problem we had was in Munich, but mostly because there are more cheap hotels than hostels in the area of town that we wanted to stay in. But that had nothing to do with the HI card, just out bobo-ness for not booking ahead :)

Katie ;)

PS: If you're a student, I recommend you get an ISIC card. It can get you great deals on almost anything!

If you dont have an HI card you can still stay at there hostels, yes? From what I gather the savings arent that great and if you change your mind you can join later?

You can stay at an HI hostel for one night only without membership, If you plan to head to SA its definately worth it theyre everywhere :)
