Hey,

Flying into Mumbai at the beginning of October and I’m hoping to book my first few nights accommodation before I arrive. So far I’ve narrowed it down to Bentley’s (the Oliver Road one), Shelley’s and possibly the YMCA, all of which are in Colaba.

Has anyone out there had any experience of staying at any of these, so far I’ve seen wildly differing opinions (for Bentley’s and Shelley’s in particular), so it would be cool to hear from anyone who has stayed at either, or anyone who can recommend a suitable alternative.

Basically looking for somewhere to get my head down, gather my thoughts and use as a base for a few days…somewhere I might meet other travellers would be a bonus.

Thanks in advance.

Heard good recommendations for Bentley's. You'd best book as far as ahead as possible in Mumbai, its filling up fast. I stayed in hotel seashore...which is really a humid cave for 500 rupees (its almost the cheapest you get in Mumbai I think).

Cheers Wouter, yeah hoping to get something booked up within the next week or so, just need to make a decision…also another quick one, my flight lands at five in the morning, do you reckon it will be pretty easy to kill the time in between then and midday (i.e. to avoid having to pay for a room from the day before) or in your opinion would it be better to bite the bullet and book something up despite the fact that by the time I’m in town, I’ll be paying a whole days rate for five hours at the most (and denying somebody else the use of the room at the same time)…?

Sorry realise this is a really vague question and it’s down to personal opinion. I reckon I’m inclined to have a wander around Colaba, before checking into a room as and when I am permitted...however this'll be my first time in India and my first time travelling, and I don't want to screw myself over from the word go...! :)

I arrived at this time as well and went straight to my hotel (it was in Delhi though). But I was not charged for those extra hours. But you'd better ask when you are there. You can always store your pack in the hotel and grab some breakfast somewhere in Colaba (try Leopold cafe at the Colaba causeway). Only take a taxi from the pre-paid taxibooth at the airport otherwise you will be overcharged.

I stayed at Bentleys for 2 nights in early July. My room was at opposite building. The condition of the room itself not so bad, but the area was not very clean.
