Actually, you have to be a respected member to report spam. It's a system that is very open to abuse, so it is only reserved for the most active members. But yes, I do concede that this feature in particular relates more to forum activity than the other things and consequently may make sense to be closer tied to post count rather than member titles.

I don't think the member titles being tied to other things is strange though. Particularly when you consider that the most tangible benefit is extra photo space - nothing to do with the forum particularly.

Mind you, the main thing is that you need to post in the right forums. Off Topic posts just aren't counted. After all, you could go up to a few hundred posts pretty quick through threads like the Word Associations ones. Would be a bit strange to become a Travel Guru like that ;)

You may also be surprised to note that the forum only accounts for less than 30% of activity on the site, so it's far from the only thing that draws people here. There are many users who never use the forum, but are very active in other areas.

Another thing that is downright illogical, is the fact that only full members and up can report spam. Shouldn't the ability to do that at least be directly related to one's activity on the forums rather than to anything else? It's kinda inconvenient that I have to alert a moderator all the time I encounter spam, while someone with a mere 4 or 5 posts could mark them himself...

Surely agree with that! A first time poster is just as trustworthy as a travel guru! This is discrimination!

Yes, I am surprised indeed to hear this! I withdraw my criticism, then (except for the spam-reporting part, wouldn't it be an idea that budding members can apply for this feature? I'm sure that not too many people would be interested in having it anyway :))

I am not sure if this is possible technically, but how about linking the Spam Report functionality to posts rather than title based on the assumption that somebody who posts a lot has been here for a good while and knows the ins and outs? Usually spammers don't get very far...
Just a thought...

I'm liking that thought . . .

I'm kind of disappointed you can't post a signature to messages with a link to your website. It doesn't even indicate your web site in your profile until you become a "full member," whenever that happens. Part of the reason I've been posting is to promote my own site, but I'm starting to think I might do better spending my time on travel forums that let you post a signature.

If your main intention is to promote your website, then sorry, this is not the place to be. There are many other avenues to get your website promoted. This is just not the place. We don't want the forum to be full of advertisements everywhere you turn to and though you may argue yours is not, it's easier for us to just implement a standard rule for everyone.

This is also why there is no auto-signature feature in the forums. Have you noticed how "creative" and annoying signatures can be? I've seen many forums where the content constitutes only less than half of what the entire page is, the rest are signatures.

We are here in the forums to get help on travel matters, and hopefully help others as well. Everything else takes a back stage, if at all.

As for getting promoted to a full member, well, you gotta post more or contribute to earn your credit here. Featured photos, blogs, referrals, also contribute to your promotion.

Most likely another travel forum would suit you better then yes. Of course most quality travel forums don't allow it, but you might still get a handful of click throughs on some of the others...

As Hien pointed out, the forums are for gaining and sharing travel advice. We have advertising options available for those wanting to promote their site, or your site will be displayed in your profile when you reach a certain member title and last but not least, you can request to have it added to the links area (if non commercial, otherwise see advertising).

Doesn't work well for businesses, but boy oh boy, does it work well for travellers!

Ain't that the truth. Nothing annoys me more than trying to read through a series of posts and having to separate the actual post from the signature, then the personal saying ("Be nice to stray cats"), then the smiley faces, and on and on it goes.... all in different font styles, sizes and colours.

It's a pet hate of mine, and one of the (many) reasons that I enjoy this forum.

Unusual of me say this, i know, but I'm forced to agree with Hein here (and James, of course). They make perfect sense, and if TP was start allowing lots of fancy signatures (or, heaven forbid, avatars) that i couldn't turn completely off, i'd likely quit TP on the spot. They can be fun the first time you see them, but after that, they get annoying really quickly - i'm not a member of any forum where I can't at least turn all that cr*p off, and have left 2 which disabled the "hide sigs/avatars feature". Providing there is an option for them all to turn it off, and it wouldn't affect the speed of access to the site, then i'd be ok with it, and i can also accept a standard sig, providing it is text (&/or maybe a single URL) only and no more than 1line long.

But my preference is for it to stay the way it is.
