On my way to Australia later this year I have about a 12/14 hour wait at Hong Kong airport, will that give me enough time to get out and have a look at the Big Buiddah and the Po Lin monastery? On my way back I have a 3 night stop planned giving me a half day and two full days and I don't want to use part of that time going back onto Lantau Island. What area is classed as the most central ? Any suggestions of 'must dos' will be appreciated. Thanks
Yes, the 12/14 hour layover is enough time to visit the buddah and monastery. The most central area in Hong Kong is called "Central", and just across the harbor is Kowloon. Easy to get around using public transport - get your Octopus card while at the airport so you can use it right away on the metro, busses, ferries, etc. Must do's are many and you can easily pick from them by looking at this website: http://www.discoverhongkong.com/usa/index.jsp
Yes, you can do it, because there shall have a cable car running between Tung Chung (next to the Hong Kong Airport) and the Big Buddah ,this system is operation testing now, and wants to open in October 2006.
