best route to tibet?????

Travel Forums Asia best route to tibet?????

On our travel, my boyfriend and I will be going to China and then India. Considering that we have budget restrictions (meaning our visit to china will be fairly short), which would be the best route into Tibet? From China or Nepal?

Another thing to consider is we don't want to spend days and days on a bus/train on one constant journey. We would like a route that involves a few days stay at villages along the way.

Thanks for any help.

If you don't want to spend days of travelling then probably the route from Nepal would be better. Of course, the new train trip from Golmud, China should be nice and you will be one of the first travellers to do this trip.
Another option is to fly from Chengdu and arrange tibet visa and things.

Good luck and enjoy. Michael.

I don't know if it is still the case. But a few years ago you could only get into Tibet from Nepal by arranged group tours. I have heard that these are pretty costly (around $US100,- a day). But I guess its worth the money (personally have never been there).

Thanks for your help. In the end the choice was clear.....we will go from China on the new railway line to Lhasa, stay for a few days or so then travel out on the Friendship Highway to Kathmandou. The best of both worlds! I'll report to travellerspoint after.

Kate.

Trains direct from Chengdu and Chonqqinq? Well, I am almost 100% positive that this is not the case. Or do you mean first to Golmud and then onwards to Lhasa?

By the way, I just read that a 75 year old tourist from Hongkong died because of acute mountain sickness and hart problems. He arrived in Lhasa and was taken to hospital but afterwards, against the advise of medical people, he took the train back to Golmud and died.
