I was just wondering whether i have a sensible number in my head set aside for spending money'.
I'm overlanding from Rio to Peru which will take approximately 40-41 days (just ofer 5 weeks)
While i'm there, the only thing i need to pay for is food, souveniers and activities throughout the trip.
Everything else like accomodation, travel, visas and the inca trail entry has already been paid for.
Do you think that taking US$1,130 ($27 per day) will be a decent amount? We've been told that we'll visit some areas where we'll hardly spend anything.
Has anyone expereinced bad situations where they'd wished they had extra spending money or at least some emergency funds?
Furthermore, i'm really tempted to bring all of the money in hard cash, would anyone strongly advise bringing half in TC?
Look forward to your feedback.
Be prepared to part with some dollars in Rio. It's a little hard on the pocket. Bus travel in Brazil is more expensive than other countries too. In Bolivia you can definitely cut corners and live on very little from day to day. For example, it is possible to get a hostel for between $2-5 a day (not bad hostels either!). Peru is generally cheap for everything as well, just a bit more than Bolivia. I think you're estimation of $27US a day is about right.
Just dont worry if you find yourself spending more than that a day at the start of your trip.
Hope that helps!
Luckily i'm travelling with an overland truck throughout the trip so all travel expenses are covered already.
I've heard that Rio is very hard on the pocket, thanks for warning though, luckily it's right at the beginning of the trip so i'll make sure i try not to spend anything untill i've passed Rio!
How about night life spending? LOL
Don't bring TC, they are almost obsolete and bulky to carry, could involve long lines/waiting in a bank, a hassle if you are in a hurry and many banks in L.A. will not now deal with them..ATMs everywhere in cities. Just be cautious if withdrawing on the street alone. Best bring a debit card with extra money in case of emergency and always have someone at home to contact in case of theft or loss of your passport, valuables and cash. Someone who is able to wire money fast. Round out your figure to $30 a day, be nice to yourself once in a while with say a good meal in a nice restaraunt.
