Child of the Northeast - absolutely amazing. It's set in the Isan province of Thailand in the 1930s, and is about a young boy growing up. It was really, really good.

It isn't set in Thailand, but another good travelling read is A Season in Red (set in China). About an Australian girl living in Beijing recently and working as a Foreign Expert on a Chinese government-owned newspaper. Funny. the author is Kirsty Needham. but i think its only in Australian and NZ bookstores.

go to the book store when you arrive at the airport, give the Q at passport control time to die down, and browse through the Asian section. Plenty of fact and fiction.
