My girlfriend and I are planning a trip travelling north to Chang Mai from Bangkok.
We hope to get to Chang Mai after 5-7 days travelling on a mixture of buses, trains and maybe boats.

We have Ayutthaya as one stop already, just looking for ideas for others.

If you have done any part of this route, which sights / stops did you enjoy ?

Thanks in advance

How about a stop at Sukhothai for a bike? Riding in the Historial Park. Find a guide book and bike in the area. Very beautiful place.

Hi I went to Ayutthaya from Bangkok, it took around 2 hours on the train. You can easily just stay for the day, hire a tuk tuk & they will take you to all the ancient temples and ruins.

I also took the over night train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, this is a plesant way to travel. Chiang Mai is a great base for trekking and other such activities such as Thai cooking courses, Thai boxing, etc. There is a great night bazar and some colourful markets.

You can also get to a place called Pai, which is a about 3 hours away by minivan. I loved this place, it's really chilled out and the scenery is stunning.

Have a great time.

Please be noted that at time of this posting (5 Sep 06), the northern rail route train is operated as far as Lampang only. There was a train accident caused by mud slide which blocked the train track. Authorities are trying to bring the operation back to normal. Check out before you decide to travel by train from BKK to Chiangmai.

for me , ayuthaya is ok for just a day trip.

usually, when people going up north, they will have a stop at ayuthaya to visit few temple eg..wat mongkolbopit, wat chai wattana ram, wat phra sri sanphet and then go to Pitsanulok visit phra puttha chinnarat and over night there.

next morning , go for a bike around sukhothai historical park and catch a bus to chiang mai...

Take a trip from Chaing Mai to Mae Hong Son via Pia, the most scenic road it Thai. 300kms through the mountains and valleys
