Hi guys,

I've got a week in Prague (14th - 20th Dec) at the start of month-long trip in europe. Any tips on unusual things I could do since we have the luxury of spending more than 2-3 days there? Any must-sees in the surrounding area?

Thanks :)

Hello Tatts82
I found the communist museum on the main street of Prague very interesting and informative. Showed how life really was, in the bad old days.

As you will be there in December, visit the Christmas market in Old Town Square and maybe take in a special Christmas concert as well. How about Christmas carols in St Vitus Cathedral (in the centre of the castle) - especially if it's snowing? Just walking through Mala Strana in the early evening, with street lights twinkling and snow underfoot will put you in the mood for Christmas.

There are several pretty towns within an hour or so of Prague by train or bus. Melnik and Pardubice are both nice. There's a good shop at the Chateau in Melnik, and they may have special Christmas gifts on sale. One of the specialities from Pardubice is gingerbread. You could visit Karlstejn castle (train from Smichov station in Prague) or, just to remind you that things were not always wonderful in this region, go by bus to Terezin and relive some of the darkest memories of the Second World War.

In addition to the Communist Museum that I also found to be both interesting and grim, I would recommend the Mucha Museum dedicated to Alphonse Mucha, a famous Czech artist known for his art nouveau style. It is located at Panska 7, Praha 1 and is just steps from Old Town Square.

You may not know the name Mucha but you will instantly recall his commercial work from his years in Paris. The museum has a website.

Spend an afternoon in Kutna Hora and its church of bones, an hour by train out of Prague.

It's creepy, spectacular, chilling and incredible at the same time. Beat that, eh?

Oh, and the beer in Kutna Hora is half price compared to Prague.

Ahoj.

If you can, go to Cesky Krumlov by bus and spend a night there. It's an enchanting city. I was in Prague in December and a lot of things were closed. But the Xmas market was beautiful.

Enjoy.
