Blonde hair in Asia?

Travel Forums Asia Blonde hair in Asia?

Hi everyone

I am finally embarking on my travels this coming November... so excited!
I'm spending 6 months in Asia, seeing India, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.
Someone said to me that as a blonde haired, blue eyed girl I should think about dying my hair brown over there as blondes tend to attract a lot of unwanted attention? Is this true? Or will I be ok travelling the way I am?
I'm travelling with my boyfriend so we should always be together most of the time.

Advice needed please - I'm getting my hair done next week so need to know what colour to go ;o)

Hello Beckiboo
Yes, your blonde hair will get u a lot of attention. But i think dying it would be overreacting, to the problem, especailly since your boyfriend will be with u. Even if u had a different colour hair, u would as a western foreigner still get a lot of attention, in Asia.

You will stick out like a sore thumb in some places & will get attention, but not usually that negative. I think it's better to just try & dress conservatively in some areas, especially in places of worship or remote areas where they are not used to seeing tourists wearing beach wear. Places like Bangkok & the islands are very used to seeing blonde girls.

If anything you'll probably receive positive attention. I have blonde hair too & in Malaysia & Indonesia, I was often asked by locals if they could take a picture of me, probably as I looked so different from them.

I wouldn't bother dying your hair. Just buy a head scarff out there. In Cambodia they have what they call krama scarves, used by the locals as it's very dusty & hot. I was given one in a guest house & found it really useful to cover my head when traveling about in motos & to protect myself from the sun.

Hi,
Don't worry about the blonde hair. I'm a blonde & have done 2 RTW trips that took us thru Asia & parts of the mid East. At first, the attention was unnerving, but then after a while I was OK with it - an English lady who had lived on and off in Cairo over the past several decades told me that Muslim girls consider blonde hair as a good luck omen. The girls will want to touch your hair and the boys will want their picture taken with you. It's really all in fun & they are very respectful. Strange though since hair dye has been around forever & any one of them could be a blonde over night!

Good luck and have fun!
