Hi!
Im staying in Melbourne at the minute and going up to Sydney at the beginning of December until the beginning of Jan and dont really want to stay in a hostel the whole time.....
Are there many house shars or apartments that go on a week to week basis? And will i have to book it pretty soon??

Any help would be great!
Thanks

Hi Sam,

If you are staying in a hostel at the moment maybe their information board can help you with suggestions.

Truly the best way to find out is through word of mouth through the backpackers scene I have found over the years. Go look at Backpacker Hostels notice boards and see if there is anything there.

Possibly put up notices in some of the hostels and see what people tell you. Backpackers ARE the best people for finding a bargain and also to tell you if you are going to be ripped off. They may also let you know of people who already have a place they are renting and require boarders.

You could try the normal rental market but be aware that you are going to pay big money more than likely.

Hope you find something special and that you enjoy your time there.

With regards

Kathryn

Not to be too negative, but I seriously doubt many people will be willing to take in a renter for anything less than three months: just too much hassle. Probably your best is to try the university noticeboard and see if there's any students going on a month-long vacation (although I think that usually starts at Christmas and goes until late January, rather than starting at early December).

Then again, I got the impression that finding a hostel in Sydney for around Christmas/New Years is already pretty much impossible, so I don't know how much choice you have...

Without wanting to sound negative - we booked our hotel/hostel back in March this year for Sydney over new year and then it was difficult. If however you are looking for a single room you may have more joy in the hostels, we had specific requirements!

Sis,

check out the following websites:
www.firstnational.com.au
www.domain.com.au

me and tim rented our apartment for 4 weeks but we did struggle to find an estate agent that did short term lets, first national in Mosman were wicked and really helpful. we found the north shore cheaper than the city.

love u and keep having fun.

I've booked a 2 bedroom apartment for 2 weeks over the newyear period for a friend and me to share in the lower north shore area of Sydney through rent-a-home.com.au - they have numerous properties for short and long term rentals all over the sydney region. It's cost £700 in total so not neccessarily a cheap option and I know the availability is pretty linited now but may be worth you looking into.

do u mean £700 or $700? coz £700 is quite alot of money in comparison...still $700 for 2 weeks sounds a bit much

Thanks everyone for your info, ive now booked a hostel for the whole of december and new year! Thought it would be a good way to meet people rather than getting an apartment! Its also not worked out too expensive!
