hi im heading to hanoi tomorrow and am wondering if anyone can recommend a good tour to halong bay. because of time i can really only fit in a day tour but if this really isnt a good option a can squeeze in a 2 day 1 night trip. im a bit worried because have heard a few stories about terrible trips/companys. thanks for any advice.

Graham,
I stayed at the 'Real Darling Cafe' and they partner with Hahn Cafe Tours. I enjoyed the one day trip to HaLong Bay(photos) and would use them again. Stick with a Sinh Cafe or Hahn Cafe tour and you should be OK.

don't fall for trap.. many companies offer cheap package but the charge you something more on the way (so ask them over is it a real PACKAGE). others play the price high up and advertise that they have sth better for you, that's just the same as the normal one.

Graham,
'linhzom' makes a good point about the tours. Shop around, at least 4 quotes before handing over your money. The scene once at HaLong is out of a movie. All the buses arrive about the same time. Then the rugby scrum to herd you on the right boat. It does not matter what you paid in HaNoi, you will be herded onto a boat that they choose. You just go along with the flow and make friends with your fellow passengers. It all works out, have fun.
