Anyone here on TP ever tried house-swapping? I want to give it a try for my next vacation, but I don't know where to start, and most companies I found on the internet don't appear overly dependable... Please send me your experiences and any useful other tips you might have!

Friends of mine where looking for somebody to take care of the house and the dogs(not really house swapping)for a few weeks.
When the came home the house was a mess, many things broken, towels missing.
Other friends of mine where lucky, but the people who where houssitting have been former collegues or where recommended from other friends.
So be carefull, also I think you have to ckeck with your landlord
if he will accept that somebody strange to him is maby for a longer time living in an appartment that he rented out to you.

Hello bentivogli
I have not tried house swapping, but i own an appartment in Dublin and have tennants in it. I live in Germany.
I think if u want to house swap or rent out a house to people, u cant really rely on them to be careful, with your things. Things being stolen or broken is a common occurrance. So dont do it, unless u are willing to accept that things in the house may not be in the condition u left them, after u return.
My attitude towards the tennants is, so long as they dont burn the place down, who cares. I think that attitude is necessary, for house swapping and renting out your house, otherwise u would end up being frustrated.
