One other query i have is that we are going to be travelling through malyasia soon and i have heard that there is soe trouble there, is this true. Does anyone know nay specific places w should avoid i malaysia and southern thailand.

Any help would be great

Grant,
Most of the buses to Phuket from BKK do the overnight run. It saves you one night's accommodation and arrives in the am, the easiest time to find a room.

Hua Hin is worth a visit, as is Cha-Am. Check with a travel agent in Hua Hun or Cha-Am about onward travel to Phuket.

Southern Thailand has had some bombings and travel advisories have been issued by several gov'ts. I don't think Malaysia has had much reported violence, but 'Dana' is the expert on Malaysia. He can give the difinitive answer you are looking for. Send him a PM.

Mike....I feel "dizzy"! Thanks anyway!!

Okay, Grant...let me give you an update on the Southern Thailand Border: IT IS PERFECTLY SAFE FOR TRAVELLERS...The entry points at Padang Besar, Bukit Kayu Hitam, Golok, Betong are still busy as ever. You can safely cross into Malaysia via Golok if you wish to go to Perhentian Islands. Anyway why would you want to stop over at Yala, Narathiwat or Golok ? The Malaysian Govt does issue advisories to ALL TRAVELLERS, if the situation warrants...Well, there has not been any...My Malaysian friends who cross almost weekly into Southern Thailand "to pay their dues"()have the same thing to say.

So, go ahead...if you wish to head for Phuket! Yala, etc are miles away from Phuket!

And to add a bit to what Mike says about Hua Hin-Phuket bus...yes, most depart Hua Hin around 2200.The air-conditioned bus terminal in Hua Hin is at the Siri Petchkasem.

Cheers.

Dana

I just came back from a trip from Satun via Haatyai to Songkhla and stayed several days in Songkhla before going back.

I'm doing this trip every 6 weeks ( for 2 years now) and until today I never experienced any problems because of the bombings etc.

The last bombs were several months ago.

So no worries with your traveling.
