Going through my travel options for this years christmas, I found a flight connection from Malev that leaves me 12 hours at Budapest Ferihegy airport. It is 100 EUR cheaper than the other with Alitalia going via Mailand without a delay. Travel date is Dec 29th.

Question: Is it possible to sightsee in Budapest on that day? Means of getting from the airport to the city? What can I do in Budapest? The plane will arrive at 6:30 a.m. and leave at 6:35 p.m.

I haven't booked the flight yet, but need to do it soon. Thanks to anybody who answers.

You can see quite a bit of Budapest in this time....but the weather might not be ideal.

You can take bus from the airport to the metro (subway) then take the metro into the heart of the city. You can also take a taxi but the metro will be cheaper.

I'd recommend visiting Vaci Utca (shopping) Fisherman's Bastillion, the castle, and climb Gellert Hill if you feel strong (all stairs) for the best view of the city. The train station (Nyugati Palyudvar was designed by Gustav Eifel (of Eifel Tower fame) but it's no longer in great shape. There is a big shopping center next to it which is interesting simply because of its size.

Also, you can check out Hero's square and the big park behind it. Something a little more out of the way is Statue Park where they keep some of the old Soviet era status - it's small but interesting.

Enjoy your trip!

John

Oh, there are also some good places to eat on Liszt Ferenc Ter (Ter=square) it is just around the corner from Octogon (everyone can tell you where this is - between Nyugati train station and Hero's square).

Hi Maria,

I would go for the stopover as Budapest is a beautiful city and you can see quite a bit in half a day.
The bus/metro option to the city is easy and takes roughly around 40 minutes.
Apart from that I can recommend the huge Markethall at Vámház körút for lunch and warming up in cold winter ;).
Here's also a link to a thread we had a couple of weeks ago. Might find some useful info there. http://www.travellerspoint.com/forum.cfm?thread=27753.

Have a great holiday,

Steff

Hi Maria,

You can get a glimpse of the city - if You're lucky: covered with snow.
The bus and metro option is still valid, count between 40-60 minutes depending on traffic. I'd suggest You to wander around Pest downtown by the board of the Danube, and take a stroll up to the castle hill. Don't miss to drink 'hot wine' (similar to "puntsch" drunken in Austria).

Have fun:)
