Just a quick question (may seem silly!)

What is the stance on smoking in Thailand? is it ok to smoke in the streets, bars etc.....

Also are they cheaper than the UK?

Smoking is nearly every where possible in Thailand.

Cigarettes are cheaper than in Europe.

Paul,
I am a non smoker so I dislike that smoking is accepted just about everywhere in Thailand. My Brit friend smokes and tells me that they are less than a dollar a pack for local brands. You will have plenty of company if you smoke.

Hey,

When I went to Thailand at the beginning of this year, the rule was you can smoke anywhere that is non-airconditioned.

So smoking at the back of those yute kinda taxis are fine. If a food place has air-con, just step outside. Even if "outside" the place is an indoor place (if you get what I mean...), you are allowed as long as theres no air-con on.

Hello Paul
Do u mean tobacco or Marijuana?
Cigarettes: Absolutely ok to smoke, anywhere u want. People in Thailand are very tolerant of a lot of things we forigners do(within reason, of course. Some things they find just too offensive), even if they do not do these things themselves. Cant remember how much cigarettes cost, in Thailand. I used to smoke, in bars and cafes, all the time, when i was there
Marijuana: Highly illegal. Not advisable to smoke it anywhere. However, people often smoke it, in guesthouses. Fines or jail sentences apply to marijuana use, in a lot of asian countries. Look up internet for specific laws, in Thailand.

While you can smoke on the streets & bars, you cannot do so in some hotels, shopping malls (air-conditioned), govt agencies which have designated "smoking zones".

In Nonthaburi province, for instance, there there is prohibition order on the sale of cigarettes & alcoholic in restaurants and food shops!

At the moment, there are about 20 smoke free hotels in Thailand -meaning they have designated smoke free floors and no smoking lobbies.

The govt has also banned cigarette ads on TVs.

In June 2006, an ABAC Poll was conducted to survey public response to a proposed ban on smoking in air-conditioned hotel lobbies, hotel lobbies, adjacent indoor air-conditioned areas. This is in addition to existing designated smoke-free zones. 77.90 per cent of the individuals/potential hotel guests and 81.50 per cent of business owners and operators who participated in the poll supported the imposition of a ban on smoking in hotel lobbies and other air-conditioned public areas.

You may have read somewhere that you can no longer smoke in the Siam Square area of Bangkok even in the streets. This is true, however, you are allowed to smoke, just not allowed to flick ash or cigarette ends into the street. You can buy a mobile ashtray if you feel the need.

You cannot smoke in Hotel Lobbies, nor on the Metro (or the stations). You have to ask to smoke in taxi's the majority of drivers will say no! They say Yes and expect a big tip! I can usually manage t ogo a few K's without one though!

Smoking in bars and clubs however, is permitted!

Much Much cheaper than in Europe to buy them!

You cannot smoke in the Airport lounges either - which is a pain!

Once you see the glass cubicles at Bangkok Airport you wiil probably give up smoking. They are very small, packed at capacity, and the smoke is so dense, you don'd see your darling who stands next to you.
Whoops, that was at the old airport. I wonder what they do with the smokers at the new one.

The smokes have those crazy gross pictures on them to encourage you to quit smoking... so far in Japan they don't have the pics. If you can handle that, then you can puff away almost anywhere.

Smoke em if ya got em. Both the legal and illegal just keep the green in your room and be discreet. Both are cheap, cheap.
