St Andrews is on the East coast a little North of Edinburgh, you might have heard of the golf course there which is very famous if you follow golf, it's the so called "home of golf". Here's a map of Scotland, if you look to the north east of edinburgh you'll see it -
The place itself is nice, it's not very big but there are a couple of very old buildings and a few museums - obviously a lot of them about golf but there are others - there's a castle, there are also some beaches and a nice harbour, but Scotland isn't usually a good place to go to the beach due to the weather. Around St Andrews there's a lot of nice countryside, you can also visit the Isle of May which has a 12th century monastery and a lot of wildlife on and around it - puffins, seals, depending on your luck dolphins and whales too.
To get there from London will take about 6 or 7 hours by train, you go to Edinburgh then switch to a train that will take you to a place called Leuchars, from there it's about 10km to St Andrews, but there are buses from the station constantly. Otherwise you could walk or get your friends to come pick you up.
