We hope to do Cambodia for a good week, however we dont have access to our mastercard and only have our ATM savings (maestro) card. Will this be ok to get money out in Cambodia? Has anyone had experience in getting money out like this rather than a adnvace withdrawral. We had some issues in Laos as Vieteine was the only place in Laos that had ONE atm that accepted this type of ATM card.
Just hoping for some re-assurance that our ATM card we have will be fine in Cambodia? If not will they exchange Vietnam Dong to the money in Cambodia?
We have found it very hard to get rid of Laos Kip..... on that note does anyone know where we can get rid of this currency in any sth east asian countries apart from Laos.....
When you say a savings card, do you mean a debit card? If so it's fine to get money out in ATM's in Phnom Penh & Siem Reap, I'm not sure about other places in Cambodia though. Have a small amount of riel for smaller purchases, get rid of it before you leave the country. You can use dollars every where, check that they are new, otherwise people won't accept them.
As for Laos I used travellers cheques, which were in dollars & I also got some dollars before hand in Thailand. Just make sure you don't have too much kip & as riel get rid before you leave the country.
Not sure if they will exchange dong for riel, dongs, riels & kip are generally weak curriences & cannot be used in other countries. You might be able to exchange on the borders.
I don't think you'll be able to use kip outside Loas or exchange it, your best bet would be to come across another traveller who is on their way to Laos & hasn't got any kip yet.
We have our maestro HSBC debit/solo card. Which we have been able to use at most ATMs around Vietnam that accept more than just the standard Mastercard and Visa. We are just a little concerned about Cambodia but if they accept debit or other cards than (mastercard and visa) i wont stress out as much. If not we have some money to tie us over for a week.
Thanks for info
I have a HSBC switch card which worked in ATMs in Cambodia. Bring back up travellers cheques & cash just in case though. But you should be ok.
When i left laos i was told i wasnt allowed to take kip out of country.... so i guess that means you cant spend else where ... maybe you can change them back into dollars if you go near an exchange counter in an airport? You may not take a flight...but a quick trip in there and exchange money in departures then walk back out?? I know you can do that in uk.
