There's an earlier thread about this issue which contains some suggestions. Personally, I find Footprint's South American handbook exceptionally good, especially their details on transportation.

I look through at the internet and then print out the for me interesting pages and take them with me.If I dont need them anymore,I drop them at the Hostel,so other people interested in them may use them.It is also cheaper then the book and up date.
I dont like to carry around this book if I only need a few pages.

for ex.for Ecuador there is a good
or TRAVELLERSPOINThas very good links and Helpers.

If I'm only going overseas for a short trip (2-4 weeks), I sometimes take an up-to-date travel guide out of the library and use that instead of buying one.
I did that for 'Lombok & Eastern Islands' and for 'Malaysia'.
The library books really appreciate getting to places they describe!!!
