What were your highlights in south america and why. I only have 4 weeks and prepared to spend to see as much as possible. Any suggestions welcome.

There is no point in wanting to see the highlights of a whole continent in just one month. Limit yourself to much smaller area (one or two countries), and take your time. If you like it, you can always come back some other time.

As a first introduction to SA, I think that Peru/Bolivia would be a good destination, given there's quite lot to see and do, both nature and culture. Plus you needn't take unnecessary flights when you limit your area. I'd be happy to give some example itineraries.

Patagonia is pretty sweet, its worth checking out but you counld easily spend all your time in that one place.

South America highlights for me were (not in any particular order):

- Inca Trail (unforgettable experience)

- Potosi Mines (major eye-opener)

- Easter Island (giant heads and whatnot! )

- Lake District Chile/Argentina (amazing scenery)

- Ushuaia (very dramatic setting)

- Buenos Aires (mainly the nightlife - the city pulses!)

- Rio de Janeiro Favella Tour (absolutely fascinating experience)

- Rio de Janeiro Lapa Street Party (mixing it up with the locals! :) )

God, I could go on all day. Wine tours, mountain climbing, horseriding. Its impossible to squeeze everything into 4 weeks, but hopefully those will give you some idea of where you want to start! :)
