Travel Forums Asia Which currency is best??

Ms Pinky has indicated that this thread is about Vietnam

I am off to VN in about a months time for a few weeks. The only thing I am wondering about is what is the best currency to take??

I am in OZ and was going to convert AUD and take VN Dong, but thought perhaps is may be better to convert AUD and take US dollars. Want to avoid paying commission as much as possible with chopping and changing currency.

Cheers All

Hi Pinky,
I think it's best to convert AUD into both VND and USD! USD are accepted every where in Vietnam, but you should have some VND for small payments or for use in the countryside (where USD rate is always lower than in big cities). In general, USD is handy to pay for hotels, shopping, but VND is more handy to pay for food, transport, small shopping, ect.
If you have soem small notes of USD, it will be useful as well, for tipping, etc.
Have a great trip.

I don't know about how much your bank will charge you but there are also ATM's in all the big cities so you can easily withdraw money that way if you need to.

Dear Pinky

As advised by others, please carry USD with you. You can convert them to Vietnam Dong at the Airport, banks and at all the hotels. It is advisable to keep your valuables in hotel safe and just carry VnD worth US$ 100 when moving around. You will find it is cheaper to shop in VnD.

Hello Ms Pinky

I think u could exchange Australian dollars, in Vietnam, easily.
My On a Shoestring book gives a list of exchange rates for different currencies, in Vietnam. Australian dollars are on the list. And I think if they were not easy to change there, the book would have said so. But i think i would confirm this, with the Vietnamese consulate.

My advice, carry USD instead of AUD, you can change USD anywhere in VN, and I've had experience that the exchange rate from USD to VND is better than (last time I had) EURO to VND, so I would assume that anything other than USD has a lower exchange rate there in VN! Enjoy your time there!

P.S. It would be easier also to just withdraw from any local ATM's, cause I also find out that my bank didn't charge much for a withdrawal transaction I did in many countries in Asia...

It's not that difficult to change AUD in Vietnam. So why loosing twice money, due to exchange rates AUD to USD and later USD to Dong?

You can take a few small USD notes with you for emergencys. Some Dong and later change AUD to Dong in Vietnam.
