Volunteer oppurtunities

Travel Forums Africa and The Middle East Volunteer oppurtunities

Myself and a friend are both intereted in doing some volunteer travel in Africa next year. So far, Ive only come accross businesses (which are only in it for the money) which provide such an oppurtunity. Does anyone know of any NPOs that would take on volunteers? We're interested in spending about 6 weeks in Africa, hopefully doing something to do with conservation/wildlife or helping underprivilaged people in anyway possible. One problem is that we're both pretty much unskilled, as we're only just leaving school. A project like helping build houses or something would be ideal.
At this stage I'm becoming really frustrated at our fruitless searches, I'd really appreciate any help and advice you could give me!

Hey,

Yes there are several NPO's that have projects in Africa, also such as you describe, eg building houses. Most of these projects however, do require you to be involved in the organization somehow. I found it hard as well to find a project by a NPO to work with. And i couldnt find on in africa suited for me. I do know a friend who did a project with a christian charity, building a church/school in a village, so you could search for such an organization.

I did volunteer in Africa for 6 weeks as well, but with a business. They had a really good project and they also helped me with the rest. For me that was the best option as I really wanted to go and didnt want look one year to find something. I did a project with African Impact in Kenya. It was very nice, if you want i can mail you with some more information.

Hey,

The are a number of NPO's that you could volunteer with, however, it is difficult to find reliable placements that are not associated with some sort of volunteer organization. After spending over six months in Ghana, West Africa and am about to return ins five weeks, I have found that many of the NPOS are associated with volunteer organizations because it helps to ensure that they receive volunteers regularly.

I volunteered in Ghana with an organization called Volunteer Abroad. It was an absolutely fantastic experience and their program costs were really reasonble for all of things that we got. We has a week long orientation in neat Ghanaian style home and during this week we participated in language training, drumming, dancing and a few volunteer projects.

After that I went to an amazing project in the central region of Ghana. I was teaching at a school called Future Island School. Right now they are building a new school and desperatly need volunteers. If you want more information on this project go to www.futureislandschool.org or you can contact me.

I also know of a number of conservation projects and building projects in Ghana that are associated with Volunteer Abroad. Some however are not and once I get back to Ghana I will be able to send you more information if you would like.
