I seem to have inadvertantly collected pipes.

I have an opium pipe from Thailand, a blowpipe from Malaysia, a sheesha from Egypt and some other sort of pipe from Morocco.

Though it is more coincidence than collection.

Well, I know what not to collect: A scar or a plastercast. (I broke my leg in Kiev and had to have an operation afterwards. No I wear a lifelong souvenier of a trip that was planned to be three weeks and lasted two days instead.)

Also stay away from certain animal products, that could get you arrested at the airport. Coral, mother-of-pearl, ivory, reptile leather products, ... You are not stupid, use your brain and the internet before you pick up something.

I have two great souveniers, one that I sold and one that is permanent.

I shipped a 1978 yellow mini saloon home to Texas from England that I later sold on ebay to some guy in mexico that probably now uses the car for smuggling midgets across the border.

The scar on my left middle finger that I got on a weekend trip to Rome that required 8 stiches, so the free clinic said thats how many they put in but was actually like 6 and a few knots when I had them taken out back in England. To make a long story short I perfomed the miracle of turning white wine into Red wine while attempting to open the bottle. wasnt even pissed either...

I was almost impaled by a 3 inch long thorn. It missed my temple by maybe a quater of an inch. I still have it (the thorn, not my temple. Well I still have that too...).

A scar on my left knee from falling (sober) into a sewer ditch in St Thomas, USVI. It was a fantastic fall...and worth the laugh once I got it cleaned and bandaged up.

I used to carve and sell walking sticks and canes as a supplement to my regular income. When I started to travel and live overseas I noticed that most countries or areas of each country had their own unique style of stick or cane. I started to collect pieces from places I traveled and now have over 75 different ones from all over the world. Some are fairly expensive, a silver and wood sword cane from Spain, but most are under $10 and bought from local craftsmen. Africa is especialy good for this as it seems that each tribal group has its own style and most have a nice story to go with the carving on the cane. They make for great displays and teaching tools. The only problem is they can be bulky if I try to get more than a couple on an extended trip. My wife collects childrens books from each country.

Usually something not bought in a souvenir shop. Especially something that doesn't have the name of the place written on it.

It's rather something that will remind you of that place and of your experience there. It might be an everyday object that you've learned to use there, or something a friend you met there gave you.
