I'm heading to SA for 6 months and debating what shoes to take for treking purposes. I will be doing a few 'treks' - inca trail, torres del paine and probably a few light day treks throughout. Am i best to get a hiking boot, trail shoe or what? I've read really good things about merrell trail shoes but i dont know if they offer enough support - i will be luggin around a 90-100lt pack as well.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Best to move this to the 'gear'-forum?
When it comes to shoes, don't be stingy. I'm pretty happy with my pair of Meindl ('heavy-duty' trekking boots (D-category)), which have been in service for over ten years now (I only use them when on vacation), and still in pretty good shape. But in any case make sure that you buy them in a specialised outdoor shop, because they generally won't sell crap.
I debated long and hard about whether or not to bring along my clunky hiking boots on my trip, but now Im very glad I did. They can be a pain in the ass, but I just tie them on to my backpack or wear them when Im on the move.
They proved invaluable on the Inca Trail - great ankle support for the awkward trails. I was really glad to have them for any of the walks/trek that I did. Most ppl that I met had boots with them as supposed to trekking shoes.
Hope that helps.
