hi
please can anyone give me advice on visas in australia? my boyfriend and i are leaving the uk with a one way ticket to sydney in january. we have stops in south america and new zealnd and will hopefully arrive in sydney in june/july time. from there we want to travel oz for a year before coming back to the uk through thailand.
my boyfriend works from the internet and makes a fair amount of money that will hopefully pay our way around the world. ive heard the working holiday visa will allow us a 12month stay but do we HAVE to work or will it just give us the option to? also, will we need to have proof of our flight out of oz before we apply for the visa? any advice/help on oz visas would be very much appreciated. thanks.xx

No, you don't have to work. Be careful that you're not treated as a resident for tax purposes though (by staying in one place for more than three months and generally engaging in activities as if you lived there) or your overseas income is taxable as well.

also, will we need to have proof of our flight out of oz before we apply for the visa?

Assuming you have a working holiday visa: no. You just need (theoretical, since no one ever checks it) proof of enough funds to buy an outward ticket (beyond the AUD $5000 you already need for the WHV).

thanks very much for ur help. i dont know if it will make a difference on tax as my boyfriend is a poker player and he doesnt get taxed in the uk for his income (not sure if oz rules on gambling winnings are different). we are not planning to stay longer in one place for more than 3months at a time anyway. where is the best place to ring or go and speak to someone about oz visas as we have lots of questions? our plans for oz are not clear yet, it will totally depend on how we feel and what happens when we are there. thanks again. if anyone else has any handy tips or info it would b very welcome!
