I will soon depart for Ghana to visit/volunteer. After i want to travel to India to meet my girlfriend. I want to do all my travelling without flying (am travelling to Ghana overland) and i am wondering about the possibilities on the sea.
I am either thinking travelling up to the mediteranean getting somehow to Port Said and trying to hitch a lift/work a passage on a commercial ship heading to India, getting on a ship heading south from Ghana around the cape or crossing Africa and getting on a ship or yacht out of Mombasa, or somewhere similar, to India.
Any idea as to whether any of these ideas are realistic?
The LP website has a forum on ship travel; have a look there. In general, I assume that your best option is indeed Port Said, rather than rounding the Cape; most sea transport from Asia to Europe obviously takes the Suez channel, so to get a passage there should be doable.
Btw have you considered to travel overland all the way? I imagine that would be quite an adventure...

Travelling overland would indeed be an adventure. My only issue is my intense hatred of beurocracy (with visas). Thus the fewer borders i have to cross the better.
Having said that i will consider it becuase it could be really fun.
