I went there a few years ago and the firework display was fantastic. The crowds are extremely dense and unless you're very patient (or very drunk) it can be annoying waiting for hours to catch a train. Apart from that, everyone's spirits are high and the ambience is very positive.

Yep, you're pretty central so the stumble back at night won't be too bad!
As for keeping the wine cool... eski's !! You can get throw away one's from Woolies or Coles (However... they're cheaper at the Wharehouse!) anwyay... one of the small ones should cost you about $20 and should hold about three goon bags or so (With Ice) This should keep the wine nice and chilled most of the day (You won't care by night time :)
The other options of course (which is what we did with our beers) was to go down to the water side and put them in the sea (keeps them nice and cold :)
Either way enjoy and remember to get there early ! IT does get reall, really, really busy !!!

I've been away from home for a few years now but I don't think much will have changed. If you can pack the esky (chilli bin) with a good feed, take your own booze and get down to the harbour side early. (Good vantage points for the fireworks go early.) Buying your booze on site will be like porcupines mating - slow and painful. Taking your own you can relax and you don't have to move so you don't risk anyone stealing your vaulable patch of soil. There will be a lot of other people around doing the same thing and it is worth chatting to those around you. The parties can really kick off. And if you are into people watching, the Sydney NY fire works are an event to behold.
The best part, (assuming nothing has changed) public transport runs late and used to be free up until about 2.00am so getting home is easy.

Now lm showing my ignorance but what is a GOON BAG?? Is that the inside of a box of wine the silver foiled bag? I get the ESKY ie the freezer box and its great to know you can get a throw away one!! That sounds a good idea - at least there is two of us so we can take turns on having a wander around and grabbing food or the like! Im hoping our hotel will do packed lunches or make us up some sarnies once lve got a spot l dont intend shifting!!

Thanks guys invaluable information!!

Yes, a goon bag, or goonie, is boxed wine and the silver thingy in it. We Aussies have a way with words.

Personally I wouldn't bother unless you had tickets to a dance party or something. Otherwise, you're going to be standing around for hours on end with about a million other people to watch some crackers go off.

It's a louts night out by the harbour.

Might see you there

If you're flying over from NZ and spending a few bucks to get here, it'll be more than worth your while to head to a good vantage point around lunch time. Seriously, the place goes bananas and the good places get packed out early. Take a small radio, some beers and just sit and wait. The fireworks are bloody awesome even better from the view of a boat in the middle of the harbour, but that's pricey and sells out quickly. Finding a place to relieve yourself can be somewhat of a challenge, but hey who cares, it'll be New Years Eve.

Sydney between Christmas and New Years is the place to be. It's the middle of summer and everything is great...You'll love it.

P.S Goon bags make great pillows too after you've drunk the entire contents
