lost again has indicated that this thread is about New Zealand

Is there an age minimum to rent a car in NZ? I am 22, will that be a problems when I go to NZ in October? Any recommendations for rental companies to go with. Or things I should be aware of? My friend who was just there said it was the best way to get around, once you get used to driving on the other side of the road that is (we are from the States). In other advice? Any idea of the exact price ranges I should be looking for?

Thanks so much!

Myself and my friend hired a car last month here in Auckland for NZ$25 a day (dirt cheap because it's the winter). Insurance per day was an extra $10. We rented our car from a company called ACE ( I think that was it).

We didnt have to worry about the age minimum as Im 27 and Andy 24, but if it helps, I met a 20yr old yesterday who managed to rent a car no problem, so I think you should be fine. :)

Also, if you are interested, the rental company we used had a special offer if you were prepared to take the car to the South Island. If you cover the ferry cost, they dont have to pay transportation costs to get their cars down to Christchurch or something, but in return they will do you a very good daily rate. Something to think about maybe.

Hope that helps! ;)

I think most of the major companies (Avis , Hertz etc) have a 25 yr age limit, there are a lot of other budget companies about. An option would be to buy a Car from either another traverler or from a specilist 'Backpacker' yard some of which offer a buy back system. New Zealand is like most countrys and second hand car dealers are known as "Car Sharks " for a reason, But you should be able to pick up a serviceable car for around $2000 Kiwi dollars not bad if you are here for a extended stay. There is also a good market in cars at the larger Hostals in the Main centers (Auckland & Christchurch )
A note on insurance, not mandatory as in many other countries but third party cover is fairly cheap and a good idea in case you total someone elses luxury car.
Having your own wheels in NZ is certainly a bounus, Hope this helps a bit. Have fun travelling around NZ and watch those RH turns and beware our give way laws are Odd

hello, I;ll be arriving on NZ november 1st in Auckland. I'll be traveling allone and also looked into a rental car but I think it is to expensive. I'll be traveling for four weeks and will therefore be buying a car. If you are interested in traveling with me we could split costs.

According to my research, I think the youngest legal age to rent a car is 21.

Rem, your correct.
The minimum age is 21years old, however most of the major rental firms will only rent to 25years+.
There are loads of rental firms that will rent to 21yr olds, the cars are not usually brand new, but jap imports. Hence they are cheaper also, they may want a larger deposit so make sure you have a reasnable amount credit limit on your credit card.
Good luck, and enjoy your trip.

Thanks everyone for the information - Ace rent a car is one company I found that has decent prices and only require a minimum of 21 years of age (just in case anyone else is interested).
