It's always good to know a handful of words in French, especially the basics. If you greet people in French and ask if they speak English, you'll probably get a better response. In Italy the teeny bit of Italian I picked up broke the ice. It's just nice to make the effort - and you reap the rewards!

I agree with Tway. Trying to speak french is always appreciated when you are visiting France.
People will also be more tolerant of your poor french if you don't take the piss out of them when they try to speak english.
