From Cork home to Germany all in one go:

Day 1: from Cork to Dublin and then by ferry to Holyhead. Nighttrain from Holyhead to London with switch and a stop in Birmingham.

Day 2: Arrival in London around 7 a.m., Eurolines bus from London leaving at 2 p.m. In Brussel around midnight, switching busses.

Day 3: arrival in Hannover at around 6 am, from there another 4 hours by slow regional train to my home town.

Travel time: about 46 hours. All done while I had 40 C fever and was suffering so heavily from pneumonia that by all means I should have been in a hospital.

Second long trip I took was from Germany to Kiev by bus: 40 bloody hours. Never again! Next time I take the train.

Longest trip distance wise: Flying from Berlin to Istanbul, from Istanbul to Tehran, from Tehran to Shiraz. From my hometown to Shiraz it took about 24 hours including waiting time for my connections and covered 4138 km in distance.

If you want to know how far to places are apart:

Jeez, and I thought my trip was long!

  • Montreal to Toronto = 1.5 hrs

  • Wait in Toronto = 2.5 hours (or so - I can't remember!)

  • Toronto to L.A. = 6 hrs

  • Wait in L.A. = 4 hours

  • L.A. to Auckland = 13 hours

  • Drive to my sister's house = 0.5 hr.

So - somewhere around 28 hours.

Most unnecessarily long trip:

  • Dorm to Belfast City Centre (on foot) = 1 hour

  • Belfast to Belfast International Airport = 1 hour

  • Wait at airport = 3 hours

  • Belfast to Paris = 2 hours

  • Wait for bus = 1 hour

  • Bus to OpĂ©ra = 1 hour

  • Wait at train station = 2.5 hours

  • Train to Caen = 2.5 hours

  • Wait and taxi to hotel = 1 hour

So some 15 hours to travel the equivalent of the width of your thumb on a map!

My longest in time was Pattaya to LAs Vegas, 2001. The real problem was my Korean Airline flight left BKK at 1:30am. I got up at 9:00am and had my last day in Pattaya. To the airport on the last minivan, off at 1:30am. I had been up for 17 hours and was just leaving. 5 hours to Incheon and then 10 hours before the flight to LAX. 10.5 hours in the air to LAX, clear customs, get my van back from my friend who was using it while I was away, eat and head to Vegas. 6 hours drive time and I was home. It was 52 hours from leaving Pattaya to arriving at my house in Las Vegas. Severe jet lag and just stupid tired. It took a few days to feel like I was hitting on all cylinders.

Never again. I don't fly Korean Air anymore. EVA has better prices and connections.

Longest single journey with no changes was Vientiane in Laos to Hanoi in Vietnam. It took about 28 hours. This "Luxury Bus" had people sitting on bags down the aisle for the duration and you had to clamber over the backs of chairs to get on and off when it stopped.

I laugh about it now!

Drove from Darwin to Alice Springs took about two days.

Done some pretty long ones involving multiple bus/boat or train/plane changes. In Thailand I got a night bus from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, zombied for the day in BKK then another night bus and change of bus, then a boat and taxi and another boat to bottle beach on Ko Phangan. That was in total probably about 36 hours!

They aren't all that bad afterwards..... Once you've done a few really long night buses and trains you feel like you can do anything!

But when it shouldn't take a long while, its really frustrating. Like if it takes an hour and a half to get home from work by bus, when its only a few miles....

Once it took me 5 hours to just get from Crewe to Sheffield by train. This is the UK, and its only 60 miles. Ridiculous!
