Hi everyone, planning to go to Amsterdam for a weekend break at the start of December. Can anyone tell me if the place shuts down during the winter months or is it still a place to go. I was there in the height of summer last year and had a fab time. ;)
If not Amsterdam any other places to go for a cheap weekend away with friends to get out of London.

Amsterdam early december is nice if the weather is good (well, dry at least). If you happen to have dutch friends, see to it that they invite you over for gift-giving on december 5th; most foreigners find it memorable. And please, don't come flying, but take a train or ferry :)

Amsterdam is always open . . . I was there in October a couple of years ago, and MY GOD it was windy. Make sure you take your winter jacket. We had a great time though.

I went to Amsterdam for 4 days the week before Xmas last year and it was amazing. It was fairly quiet but still the same great atmosphere - as far as I saw everything was open except the boat trips. Walking round in the snow and seeing the Xmas lights/decorations makes you look at the city in a totally different light!

Take a few coats though cos it's freezing!

mind you that snow was a once-in-a-decade event; usually december is cold and rainy, and not much fun, also because the rest of the country, normally beautiful, is just brown and muddy. But tourist-wise, everything does indeed stay open, even the canal trips as far as I knew...

Amsterdam is still alive and kicking, in December.
I had an unexpected night there, one December, because my flight to Ecuador was cancelled, and there were no other flights to South America, that day.

Another place u could consider going, is Berlin. I was there, last weekend. There are endless options, for things to do, at night. And the public transport runs all night, at weekends.
