hi there, i went out to vanuatu august last year (2005). Its a pretty nice place to visit all the locals are very friendly. Its really good if you like snorkelling and great to escape the aussie winter. i only stayed on the main island but if your feeling adventurious or have plenty of time you could head off the main island and visit the volcanos, im not sure when the land diving festival time is it might be around may but dont quote me on that i think its more likely around easter. The night life is pretty quiet in port vila but good enough for a decent night out. the beaches in vila arnt great the one on irariki and the other down in the lagoon are only small but there are others round the island which are pretty good. if your just backpacking it check out the wild pig hotel, the have a website its a good place to stay cheap. and if you can time it to avoid the australian school holidays then it will be much less choatic. got any questions just ask me.

the cost of flights varies a fair bit depending on where in aus your heading from, from melbourne where i went from its about A$650return. from brisbane about A$520 return. virgin blue are generally the cheapest of few airlines that actually fly there, and they have sales fairly regularly.

hey anna,

i just got back from a week spent in port vila with 2 mates of mine, and we had an awesome time. we went off-peak before the school holidays and managed to get a a flights/accomm/bfast incl. deal for around $1400 flying air vanuatu from sydney and staying at le meridien for 7 days.

As for when you get there, the locals (ni-vans) are all really friendly, the place is just beautiful, and if you're the adventurous type I'd highly recommend checking out EDGE adventures (www.edgevanuatu.com) my friends and I did the Jungle Paintball and Cascade Capers abseil down a 50m metre waterfall and they were without doubt the highlight of our trip. There's also plenty of island day tours, and other fantastic activities - checkout my blog entry on the trip @ http://sacha-e.travellerspoint.com/ and feel free to ask me anything.

Hope this helped.
