Thailand Coup - How will this affect travelers?

Travel Forums General Talk Thailand Coup - How will this affect travelers?

I don't have a lot of details. I hope this all sorts itself out for the good of the people of the country.

Selfishly, I'm wondering how this will affect travellers. I (like many from what I've read on TP) am supposed to fly into Bangkok on Oct. 17.

Any news or advice would be much appreciated.

Here are three of links that Hien brought to my attention:

BBC - 'Coup' sparks Thailand emergency

CNN - Thai army chief leads coup while prime minister away

The Star Malaysia - Thailand's Military Ousts Prime Minister

Jase007 also started a thread in the Asia forum. Look here:

Tanks appear in Bangkok - reports

Hope this helps...

As serious a matter as this is, especially for travelers - this particular line caught my eye:
(Taken from the thestar.com.my story.)

The coup went largely unnoticed in Bangkok's popular tourist districts, where foreigners packed bars and cabarets, oblivious to the activity about two miles away.

I'm inclined to let this one stay for the moment as you are "wondering how this will affect travelers". The responses here will probably different from those in the other thread. So, we'll give it a bit and see... ;)

Spoke to a colleague just now, he says he'll still go to Bangkok to visit his friends, who are living there. So maybe travellers will be more cautious, but might not necessarily stay away in droves.

Dear John, with all due respect this story is far from over. The Military has taken over the Government. It now can install whatever new form of Government it wants to. I don't know how all this is going to shake out in the end but we're not there yet by a long shot. BTW, Americans should keep a close eye on this one because sooner or later it's gonna happen here IMO. Maybe even 2008.... wouldn't put ANYTHING past that gang. Zoom
