Hey all Travellers...
Guys i really need some inputs in terms of planning a vacation in the month of December probably anywhere in Europe. I want to go to some place which is not too cold... I have heard spain would be a good option, but i would really appreciate if i can get some suggestions...
Just to let you know, i have been to Switzerland, London, Paris and Italy in Europe, so would like to explore other places...
And i have put up in Leeds, UK as of now.
The only places are Southern Spain, Portugal, Sicily and Malta as well as Southern Turkey around Antalya. It will be rainy and cool, with temperatures at 20 C at the ultimate maximum, but more likely in the 5-15 range. You will need a sweater under your raincloak there.
For a place a bit warmer and with guaranteed sun you need to go to either Morocco or Egypt. Aswan in Egypt is great at this time of the year, I was there in early December last year. Loved it, especially the sun.
But if you want it a bit closer, go for the ultimate European coping mechanism: Visit a tropical spa. Nothing like two days in a CenterParc or in Tropical Islands.
http://www.centerparcs.com/ (pick "other country", not UK when you are asked where you come from. It will give you a selection of all parks in English)
See here why I recommend this.
There is only one place in "Europe" where you can count on good weather in the Winter: The canary islands. The canary islands are part of Spain, but are actually located just next to the African mainland. The temperatures are almost consistantly between 18-24 centigrade year round. When I was there it was end of December through the beginning of January. I was actually swimming in the sea on christmas day.
Anywhere else you go in Europe including Spain, Portugal and Turkey can be very cold in December. The temperatures can be 20 one day and the next day -5. This is why the average temperature is 10c. I lived in Greece for 5 years and some of the most brutal winters of my life were there. In some southern European countries such as Greece, you feel colder in the winter than in Northern Europe. The reason is that the buildings are not made to stand severe winter temperatures. They can be very cold and drafty.
Some people have a negative impression of the Canary Islands and associate them with intense tourism and over-development. I was actually surprised by the beauty of Tenerife outside of the main tourist area of Los Cristianos. I have written a description of my visit on our website TravelsWise. If you approach it correctly and do your research, you can have a wonderful time there. The other good thing about the Canary Islands is that lots of discount airlines fly there. Check out our list of European discount airlines and hunt around for a bargain flight.
