Our first Tampa to Syracuse drive since moving to Florida last year. Kids are 7, 4, and 2, and good in the car. Leaving in June.
We are thinking of leaving 8pm so they will sleep for 8 of the 12 hours, then stop in Winston-Salem (my sister) the next morning, spend the day with the cousins, depart NC in time to be in Portsmouth, VA for a couple hours to visit with my aunt, then on to Syracuse.
I wd be grateful for your impressions of this plan, and your route and timeframe suggestions.
native new yorker, lived in key largo for a year.took us 1 to I95 when i drove home, total driving time for us was @23hrs,we as well made a few stops but straight and long. gas is about 2.15 a gallon in ny,so gas up in jersey, still might be under $2.well enjoy, good luck not much to the ride, should be nice to break up the driving w/ your stops...... have fun, Roy
My parents took us on long road trips when I was younger as well. I couldn't tell you anything as much as 11111 did, but I can definitely tell you that the fact that you are stopping twice in between will be appreciated by your kids greatly. Kids tend to get bored really easily on road trips (to state the obvious ) especially the trip from Florida to New York. We did that trip when I was 8 and I remember the boredom especially before hitting South Carolina. What would be even better for the kids would be if you left earlier than 8 so that they could be sleeping during more of the trip to NC. That would give you some peace and quiet for longer and you'd get to your destination earlier so that you could enjoy a good night's sleep. Have fun!
