Is Hitch Hiking accepted/safe/common in aus? I reckon it is but just to make sure.

If you don't mind being murdered then im sure it is acceptable.

There have been a couple of well-documented cases of backpackers who have been murdered after being picked up by the side of the road. Most notably, Ivan Milat in Southern NSW murdered at least 7 people. See website if you want gruesome details (its a serial killer website, and no I'm not obsessed, I just thought I'd look up the facts for you and found the website ):

However I do know of people who have quite safely hitchhiked in rural areas. My advice:
1 Use public transport if you can - there are bus or train services between Australian cities
2 Try and get lifts from women or families, I think they are less likely to be rapists or murderers
3 NEVER hitch-hike alone
4 Be careful with taking lifts from long-distance truck drivers - they may have been driving for days without sleep, hopped up on aphetamines

I wouldn't do it, but I'm not a big risk taker
