I will be travelling to Hong Kong in October for business. I called my cell phone company and (when I am in Hong Kong) they want to charge me $2.99 a minute to call USA and $1.99 a minute to call Hong Kong.
Can anybody suggest alternatives? Cell Phone rentals. My phone is not new, perhaps 1-2 years old.
If you have a cell phone, you could buy a prepaid sim which is great and easy to use. A lot of them include international roaming.
If you dont have a cell, you can buy very cheap cell phones in HK which I assume may even be cheaper than renting one.
Theres a shopping centre (a small building) in Mong Kok that sells only cell phones. I cant remember the name......something starting with the word "Sun". If you get to Mongkok, its quite close to the large Espirit store with a Sony service centre upstairs which is on a huge corner (cant really miss it if you roam around the place). If you find it, I'm sure you can ask someone for directions from there.
Hope this helps!
Make sure you have a GSM phone, not one of those CDMA, then you can just buy any pre-paid GSM card, insert it in your phone, and you're set! Calling the USA last time it cost me only about 50 cent in US dollar, and you can to call any number in HK which only costing me 10 cent a minute! It's cheap communicating with a HK pre-paid card! I forgot though which provider I used, but you'll have plenty of choices when you get there! Good luck!
