The only real annoying problem i had on a plane was sitting next to an American couple who literally had about 20 newspapers and were talking really loud about the issues in the paper.

I sat next to a huge bloke coming back from Sydney to London who was wearing a really sweaty, smelly football shirt. He made disgusting noises most of the way and kept elbowing me. He made no effort to talk to me or the passenger sat on the other side of him until we had actually landed at Gatwick 27 hours later when he asked me "are you travelling far?". What a really thoughtful question after flying across the globe!!!!

I also sat next to a young Australian lady from Bangkok to London who persuaded me to get drunk with her while everyone else slept, we had a great laugh when i thought the trip home would be really depressing so it's not all bad.

The worst people must have been that bunch of schoolkids on the flight to Paris. They kept jumping up and down, yelling at each other across aisles, kicking the seat, the whole deal. One of them actually managed to break the seatbelt somehow.
But apart from that, I am usually lucky, I normally make clear that I don't want to be disturbed by anything (spend most of my time with headphones on or dozing/pretending to be sleeping).

I've never had a really bad experience on a flight, but I guess you could say that I have been part of an very annoying group of people. Imagine a choir of about 60 people aged 16-23 getting really excited about going to Spain and talking loudly and singing the whole way there. It didn't bother me because I was part of the group, but it must have pissed some of the other passengers off...

On my way to Singapore there was this man from Germany sitting next to me and he was eating lollies thru the flight..I mean for 7 and half hours..and then he was watching some comedy from telly and had this really annoying laugh...I couldn't stand him..oh well..we are all sorts..

the FRIENDLIEST person i've ever sat next to was a lovely girl from germany, who i had the pleasure of talking to all the way from hamburg to newark, new jersey. she also helped me re-check my luggage & after spending some time in the airport together, finding out what terminals our connecting flights would be at, we hugged goodbye! i'm convinced that it was her help, which prevented my luggage from getting lost, thank you angelika. i can only hope that when i travel to america again in august, i’ll find myself another angelika. :)

just thought i'd bring a little good karma to the table.

It was a flight from Melbourne to Adelaide. Though a short flight it was the worst flight I have ever taken. I was the aisle seat with a massive man next to me. This guy was so big that he took up his seat and literaly half of mine. It forced me to lean over the arm rest into the aisle. The flight was completely full and there was nothing they could do. To make matters worse he smelled like he had not showered or wiped in about a month. Not to mention he sweated the entire trip which eventually made its way on to me. Never again will this happen. I will gladly miss a flight than be in a situation such as that.

On my way back to London from Istanbul, the girl next to me threw up, not once but twice during the three hour flight. And it wasn't even motion sickness, turns out she'd had a big night and was hungover! I was not impressed, lol.

Excellent topic. Really excellent. I agree, sitting next to people of a certain size, shall we call them, is pretty much death. Same with little kids that squall and yell and kick seats and the parents that let them. I have insurmountable respect for those parents that keep their kids quietly occupied and under control.

One of the worst (adult) seatmates I've ever had was on a Paris-San Francisco flight; I was 15 at the time and it was the return part of my first time flying trans-Atlantic solo, so I of course was too shy to speak up about it. He was a very grubby unshaven Spanish guy wearing a trucker cap and checkered slip-ons and smelled like a cross between a gym towel and a rum distillery...a real class act. The fact that he reeked so potently would have been enough, but he fell asleep for the entire eleven hour flight, trapping me in the middle seat and waking up five minutes before we landed.
