I would recommend insurance for Asia at least. You have to think of the worst that can happen. If you were badly injured and lying in a rural hospital in Thailand, would you want to be repatriated?
I think Oz/Nz have a reciprocal arrangement with the UK, whereby you sign up when you arrive for their health service treatment, but get more specific advice on this from someone who knows.(I do know that NZ charges a fee for visiting a GP though - they're not free).
I took my family around the world for a year and the BMC (British Mountaineering Council) did the full works, including stuff like riding scooters etc, for half what the big boys like Boots were doing. They were so cheap I went over all the cover with a fine-tooth comb (bloody boring) but couldn't find a catch.

Defo get insurance. We had our room robbed in a hostel in Cairns and had alot of stuff stolen so it's good that we were covered plus you need it incase of an accident or you get really ill. You can get some backpacker special offers. Just shop around.

its always worth it, you may be in control of yourself and your actions, but you can NEVER know what other people/animals/vehicles will do to you...

Having recently been burned by my insurance company, Im feeling a bit bitter.

Its important to have it for health/injury...but I havent gotten back even half of what my electronic items were worth (and was having paid extra to take out special cover for them). Hmph!

Tip: research the companies out there and really compare your quotes and what you are covered for. Also, make sure you have receipt for things. Keep everything.
