We flew to St Petersburg about 3 years ago now with BA from Heathrow for about £140 each but this was a few years ago. Your best just searching around.

We sent off for our visas to Edinburgh and l think it took around 1 week from when we sent off our passports for them to be returned - you also need an invitation from your hotel to go along with your visa application. We simply down loaded the visa application from the website.

Try searching

Alternatively fly to one of the Baltic states with easyjet or Ryanair and take the train. There is a daily night train from Riga.(I'll be doing that for my trip to Russia, it is much cheaper and doesn't take that long.)

Germanwings also has very cheap flights to Russia, you could take a budget flight to Germany and connect there.

BTW, some hostels offer free visa support if you stay with them. Just book over the internet. They will send you a letter of invitation as well as register you when you stay there.

The St. Petersburg International HI hostel is one of them.

I don’t know the cheapest airline for sure, though I guess it is Transaero. But instead I know where you can book the cheapest and not bad hotel room or apartment in St. Petersburg: Luck!
