First post here so all help is much appreciated. I am hoping to go travelling alone for my first time sometime in early 2007. I was hoping to hit western Oz first & then travel from Cairns down to Melbourne, the problem that I seem to have is that if I do the whole Western Australia thing how do I get from Broome to Cairns quickly & cheaply without seemly going on a wild goose chase around Oz ?????
Unfortunately, flying out of Broome will cost you a lot as it is such a little airport in the middle of nowhere. I'm not sure if you can even fly from Broome to Cairns. The only other option would be travelling through the Kimberleys to Darwin which is an amazing journey and get a flight from there. You shouldn't miss out on Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks either, they are truly amazing and unique. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
Depending on time the you have, take a bus across the top between Broome & Cairns hop on / off and check out the sights - Gekie Gorge, Bungle Bungles (well worth it even if you just fly over them) then Mattaranka, Katherine, Darwin, Kakadu & Litchfield National Parks. Maybe even down to the Centre & Alice, Uluru, Olgas etc. Other sights also into Queensland.
But, if you are travelling before April/May, and will be in the tropics ie 'above the Tropic of Capricorn', which includes Broome & Cairns. You may find it gets quite wet and humid including tropical storms (Cyclones). So stay in the southern states it will be warm & comfortable there.
Don't try to do too much - enjoy to the max, fewer things instead of trying to see a lot but just passing through. Hey, you can always return !!
In any event sounds like a great adventure so enjoy your experiences in OZ.
