Oh my old company ticked me off as paying tax classed s a non-resident and now instead of getting a nice $2500 back I owe the ATO $211.52

GRRRR and I have called people and there is nothing that I can do about it!

:(
Sorry I just had to vent...so be careful which box you tick on your form folks!

Well assuming you're working in Oz and you hold a UK passport and you're on a working holiday visa then you are a non-resident. No matter what the tax agents or the boxes say about where you lived for how long.

Then again $2500....I'd be pissed off too.

That's not necessarily true, depending on the individual. I'm not referring to lanchutt's case here, however the ATO (Australian Tax Office) has an example of where a person on a WHM visa in Australia is considered a resident for tax purposes: located here.

And with the ability to work for 1 employer for up to 6 months now, there might be an increase of WHM visa holders being considered as residents for tax purposes, depending on how their time is spent.
