6 days in Delhi - too long?

Travel Forums Asia 6 days in Delhi - too long?

Hi everyone

We arrive in Delhi on 15th November. As for our plans from then on... well the only thing we have planned so far is to be at the Taj Mahal for my boyfriend's birthday on 21st November.
Which basically leaves us with 5/6 days in Delhi with time to kill.

Is there a lot of stuff to do in Delhi or should we try and venture out and make the most of our days? I definately want to spend a couple of days in Delhi, but would 5/6 days there be a bit of a waste of precious days? We're only in India for 45 days so want to fill in as much as we can.

Ideally, I'd LOVE to catch a flight over to the Himalayan range for a day or two... but doubt whether this would be possible :(

We've GOT to be in Agra for the morning of 21st Nov - got a fancy hotel booked so definately can't be missing this!

Any ideas anyone?

Lots of stuff to do in Delhi, and whether or not you can spend 5-6 days there depends completely on what sort of traveller you are. You can see most of the historical sights and do the touristy things (Red Fort, Jumma Masjid, Qut'b Minar, Jantar Mantar, Old Delhi markets, Gateway of India, Connought Place etc) in 3-4 days. I myself keep 2 full days just for shopping every time I go to Delhi - so that's five very action-packed days right there for you.

Be sure to hire yourself a good guide locally - often, there're guides available right at the entrances of various attractions, and should not cost you more than 300-400 rupees for an hour's tour. Even though I am Indian, my experience of the Red Fort and Jumma Masjid were enhanced immeasurably when we hired a guide the last time we were there.

Oh, and please EAT LIKE A HOG when you're there. Connought Place is good for puri-chole and spicy potato 'chaat's. Old Delhi, in particular, has the YUMMIEST sweets (ask for jalebis). Make it a point to visit the "Paratha Vala Galli" in Old Delhi (literally, "street of stuffed bread") where you find the best stuffed flatbreads on earth. My mouth waters to even think of this stuff - eat to vicariously satiate my yearning for this food if not for yourself!

If you find yourself at a loose end, there are many day trips you can make from Delhi - Agra not the least of them. Trust me, you will not regret getting there a couple of days early, the Taj Mahal is mesmerising no matter how many times you come back to sit in front of it, and there are of course other attractions near Agra that you may not have time for otherwise, like Fatehpur Sikri.

Have a good trip!

Yes........six days is too long.It is better to spend in other cities like Jaisalmer or Jaipur. or in Jodhpur or you can spend an extra day in Agra.

Since you wish to see INDIA as much as possible, why waste more time in a city where you can always return to.

Since you have 45days to spend suggest you to see the south also, especially Kerala state.

All the best.
