My wife and myself are going to oz for 1 month flying into melbourne for xmas then going on to sydney fo new year and flying out of brisbane, anyone know good hotels or things to do. Planning on going to the barrier reef for some diving at the start of january anyone know what the weather is like at this time of year.

Any tips or advice would be cool.

January in QLD? Hot and humid! Particularly for the reef - for which you have to go considerably further north than Brisbane.

In the Melbourne area, the Great Ocean Road is a good day trip (it's good to take a tour, so you have a guide). Phillip Island can be interesting too, you see fairy penguins in their natural habitat when they return from the sea. There's plenty else to do in Melbourne as well.

Also loads to do in Sydney, including trips out to the Blue Mountains, as well in within the city. For the new years eve fireworks at Sydney Harbour, I noticed people started to "claim their spot" early that morning - particularly in the Macquaries Point area, where you get a good view of both the Opera House & Harbour Bridge. I saw the fireworks back in 99 outside the MCA building at the Harbour, where you can look across to the Opera House but not the Harbour Bridge - it was still a good point to be!

I'd suggest going to a bookshop and finding a guide book that suits you (my preference is Lonely Planet, but people prefer different ones!). Any hotels/hostels/guesthouses you may stay in will most likely have info on what you can do.

Sydney - Blue Mountains, Rocks, Sydney Opera House, Darling Harbour

Melb - Eating, Shopping, Great Ocean Road, Eating, Shopping, Dandenongs, Eating, Shopping.......

Queensland - Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, and "Crikey", Don't forget Australia Zoo..

So much to do. So little time. Trust me, you will not get bored. There is many great things to see and do in this wonderful place. ! month will just be enough for the tip of the Iceberg.
Enjoy.....

I would have to second all of the responses above. Qld .... January .... Are you crazy :-) Just joking, i am in Qld, it is all okay but do bring the Sun screen and a big floppy hat.

On a different note, i would like to suggest the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb which is really great or do something with your wife that you would never do in a million years like - sky dive in Australia (if you haven't already) or something crazy like that.

Places to eat in Sydney - i have not really been there too much but i am told by friends and most other people who live in Oz that Doyles is the best Australian Seafood restaurant if not in the world !!!

Make sure you go get some fish and chips from there :-)

Enjoy!!
