I'm going on a trip to NZ and then Oz, I just booked the flight which is exciting since I've been talking about it for over a month now. So I'm arriving Dec. 26 in Auckland and will be there for about a month. I'm still deciding on a bus company, but I think I'm going to go with Stray, looks pretty good and seems to have the best overall reviews (from this site), anyway that's off topic. I'm more concerned about the weather. I'm just wondering what to expect as far as temperature and rain, this will greatly help in determining what to pack.
Also if anyone cares to comment on Stray I'd love to hear about it.
January is there summer (our Winter) so pack light clothing, maybe a windbreaker or something that you dont care if you get it wet. pack a bag to cover your pack and pick up a cheap umbrella.
Even in New Zealand's winters i was wearing just a tshirt and jeans and the odd sweater in the evenings... so no worries.
January is as safe a bet for warm weather as you're going to get in New Zealand. There is still a chance of a bit of rain or some cooler days though. I would take a decent waterproof, 'specially if you want to do some hiking.
I have done a Stray trip - thought it was quite good, and I'm not really an organised trip kind of person.
January is one of the best months mais it's not that hot, especially in the South Island. So don't forget to take some warm clothes, waterproof preferably.
You can expect temperatures ranging from 30° (up North and Christchurch) to 10° (Invercargill, Bluff).
Because of the ozone hole, you'll have to use high level suncreams and wear a sunhat.
I agree with Sheepie10 on the weather front, and the suggestion about the suncream and hat is a vital and important point. The sun will burn you !!!
The temp will be comfortable, but it's always handy to keep some sort of light fleece or jacket handy (4 seasons in one day is possible).
Have a fantastic time
thanks for all the responses, sounds like it will be nice.
